Valley Haven Stream Restoration

Over wide stream with exposed, high, vertical banks on both sides

About the Project

The Valley Haven Stream Restoration Project is a progressive design build project consisting of three stream segments located in the Stonehaven community, between Thermal Road, Valley Haven Drive, Pineburr Road, and McAlpine Creek. The three streams are unnamed tributaries of McAlpine Creek and are degraded, with over-wide channels, high banks, and active erosion. The high channel banks disrupt aquatic passage and reduce the effectiveness of the floodplain to accommodate the flow of high runoff storms. The active erosion of the banks reduces surface water quality when sediment enters the stream.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) has identified this stream as a strong candidate for improvement by restoration, enhancement, and preservation. Funding for the project will be paid with CMSWS storm water fees.

The goals for the Valley Haven Stream Restoration Project are:

Improve water quality
Stabilize stream banks
Reconnect the floodplain
Improve aquatic habitat
Improve/protect stream buffers
North State Environmental has been selected to design, permit, and construct this project. Since 1994, North State Environmental (NSE) has completed over 367 projects and over 1 million linear feet of stream restoration projects. For this project, NSE has partnered with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. (KH) to lead the design and permitting phases of the project. KH is a multidisciplinary firm with over 20 years’ experience working on stream restoration projects. Other partners include TELICS for easement acquisitions, CES for survey and mapping, Froehling & Robertson (F&R) for geotechnical engineering, and WGR Southeast for risk management and health and safety plan development.
